Many mile-long races are won and lost in the first ten feet. Every triumphant winning horse and jockey first had to enter, then make a clean break from, the starting gate. And it isn’t easy. The whole idea of getting very large, very powerful, high-strung thoroughbreds into tiny padded green boxes must seem a little flawed, at least to the men and women who have to accomplish it nine times a day. But, along with the intrepid jockeys, accomplish it they do. The race horses are trained to accept the momentary confinement and to break from the gate at the sound of the bell. After that, it’s all about acceleration.
