It wouldn’t be Saratoga, and it certainly wouldn’t be the Travers, without the fabulous fashions at the track. The grandest hats go side-by-side with trim, straw boaters. And there is always as much activity off the track as on to keep your attention.
In 1989 I created a poster showing "Forty Niner" winning the Travers for the famous trainer Woody Stephens — his very first Travers win. Friends convinced me to take a poster up to Mr. Stephens in his box in the clubhouse and present it to him. I did just that. He was very gracious and liked the poster very much. He even signed one for me!
But, in the box directly behind Mr. Stephens was a woman in a red hat and red jacket. She was beautiful and I knew right then that she would be the next poster! So when I took photos of Woody Stephens I took a few of the Lady in Red as well!
There is no Travers version of 1990 “Lady in Red.”
