Backstretch Workout (2018)

The barns of Saratoga's Backstretch are as famous as they are picturesque. It's a privilege to spend any time of the racing day back there.

In this year's poster we've captured trainer Bob Baffert's, West Coast, in his morning workout on the main track. He's running in full view of the grooms and hot walkers grazing their charges under the great trees. West Coast with Mike Smith aboard won the 2017 Travers, leading the field from wire to wire.

We've tried to show the strong light and deep shadow that makes the backstretch such an intimate space. Uncrowded, quiet, close to the action and with the best view of Saratoga's famous Clubhouse and roofline, it's the best seat in the house. I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be on an August morning than here, with my coffee and sketchbook. Heaven!
