    Calling Me

    This little color study was for a Dick Francis book, Second Wind, that featured a flight into the eye of a Caribbean hurricane. For me, storms or no storms, the end of March always brings with it an overwhelming desire to go south -- really south.

    I've been fortunate to return many times to the coast of Mexico, south of Cancun. The water and beaches and the bougainvillea there are just spectacular. Every time I return, I wonder why I don't just stay.

    But, I've never been to the eastern Caribbean for diving and sailing and painting. Now, that sounds like a plan ... right about now!

    Here comes the sun

    Finally, five straight days of warm weather and sunshine. Crocuses and Snowdrops are popping up everywhere. The ducks in Buckingham Pond are paired up and Mr. and Ms. Cardinal are making the rounds of the bird feeders. Even the house contractors are booked solid. All sure signs of spring.

    We might get a snowfall or two before it's over, but the sun is high and strong so it won't last long. By next week, we may even have green grass. Hallelujah.

    Working with the Queen

    I've been doing some studies of Rachel Alexandra lately. She's an amazing lady. As the 2009 Horse of the Year she has a brilliant career ahead of her. I've been trying to capture how she holds her head aloft and how calm and intelligent her eyes are. She just projects strength and focus.

    Sketches are something I do before I start the finished color work that become prints and posters. But, sometimes even a quick sketch can capture the moment. Rachel should be racing again in April. I can't wait.

    Goodbye, Sir Richard

    Sunday, February 14th, the legendary writer Dick Francis died in his home on Grand Cayman Island. He was a wonderful man. I discovered his habit-forming murder mystery writing years ago, and read all I could find. Much later, when I was asked to create cover art for his books, my son and I went to visit him in his home on Seven Mile beach.

    One of the most-beloved authors in the world, he created more than 40 books with plucky, unforgettable characters. He must have been one of those himself. He rose through injury and disappointment to delight millions of fans. He was kind and humble and generous. We'll miss you, Dick.     Doing Dublin

    My friend Dr. Denis Foley and I toured the Dingle Peninsula near Tralee in southwest Ireland and then drove to Dublin for a week of research on an exhibit featuring the Irish patriot James Connolly. Driving across Ireland, we stopped at the world famous horse breeding farm, the Irish National Stud in Kildare. What a magnificent place.

    In Dublin, Denis spent his days in one of the great libraries and I was free to wander about the city taking pictures and doing sketches of the locations in the exhibit. Then we'd have to find a pub, or a play, or — one of my favorite things on the planet — a great old used book store! Dublin is full of great people and good living and I can't wait to go back.
